Tayuya

Character

Tayuya stands out as the sole female of the Sound Four, the elite quartet that guarded Orochimaru. Armed with a demonic flute that commands ogre-like summons and weaves sound-based illusions, she fought Shikamaru during the mission to retrieve Sasuke, and met her end when a Suna kunoichi flattened the forest around her.

Appearance

Standing as the smallest of the quartet, Tayuya has a slim frame and pale complexion. A wild mane of dark pink hair, rendered as red in the animated series, spills past her shoulders, split into long bangs that drop on either side of her face and one down the middle. To tame it she pulls on a striped black cap with bandaged flanks, tucking the loose strands behind her ears so they trail down her back. Her brown eyes, lined by lashes that reach the corners, usually sit under a flat, unreadable look, and the circular triskelion of her cursed mark rests hidden at the nape of her neck. She dresses in a tan tunic over a black shirt, its hem carrying the Sound Four emblem, paired with tight black shorts, arm-warmers, bandaged leg warmers, and a purple rope knotted like an inverted bow at her waist.

Once Kabuto revives her, she looks as she did in life apart from the grey sclerae shared by his other resurrected fighters.

Personality

Foul-mouthed and combative, Tayuya rarely softens her tongue for anyone, teammates included, though the others largely shrug off her insults as routine. She trades jabs with Jirobo, who nags her about speaking in an unladylike way; she answers by branding him a fatso. Her manner, speech, and dress all read as unusually masculine, and Orochimaru once observed that her refusal to lose could drag the whole team down. Brimming with contempt, she labels her foes trash and boasts she could finish off Kakashi, yet she visibly dreads Kimimaro, who had once beaten her entire group. Across her duel with Shikamaru she grudgingly warms to him, tossing him backhanded praise, and she holds her own odd code, mocking him for spending teammates to reclaim a boy who defected by choice. In the anime her resurrection leaves her bitter over her death and fixated on avenging it against the Sasuke Recovery Team.

Abilities

Ranked by her own account as the Sound Four's second finest, trailing only Sakon, Tayuya fights at a level Shikamaru pegged as jonin caliber, and Kabuto later judged her worthy of resurrection. She is swift and acrobatic, flipping through the air while never breaking the tune on her instrument, and though she favors distance she can land a solid punch, having clipped Naruto in mid-flight. A sharp tactical mind rounds out her skill set, if not quite matching Shikamaru's.

Her signature tool is the Demonic Flute, whose melody directs three towering ogres called the Doki. These brutes shield her, trade blows in her place, and drain an opponent's energy through spectral worms they release. The same music carries her genjutsu, most notably the Phantom Sound Chains, which travel with the sound itself and can bind a target across great range even without a fixed location. A cursed seal branded on her neck feeds her power in two stages, the second darkening her skin, sprouting horns, and lending strength enough to shrug off Shikamaru's shadow holds; rage draws still more out of it, and her revived form widened the reach of her sound techniques considerably. Alongside her comrades she also wields a battery of joint methods, from disguising formations to barriers like the Four Black Fogs Formation and the Underworld Turnover.

Her flute proved her one weakness, leaving her exposed at close quarters. During the Sasuke pursuit she cornered Shikamaru with her Doki and illusions, but he read her finger work and turned the tide; Temari then arrived, scattered her sound waves, and buried her under falling timber. In the anime Kabuto revives her for the Fourth Shinobi World War, where she again clashes with Shikamaru before her soul is returned to the afterlife.
