Overview

The Sasuke Recovery Team came together as an emergency response, its single purpose being to keep Sasuke Uchiha from abandoning the Leaf for Orochimaru. Konoha had won the Konoha Crush but paid dearly for it, and to hide its weakened state the village kept most of its chūnin and jōnin loaded with distant assignments. When word arrived that Sasuke had thrown in with Orochimaru, the Fifth Hokage had almost no one qualified for a mission of that A-rank severity. Her only recourse was Shikamaru Nara, freshly raised to chūnin, and whatever genin he could round up within half an hour.

Naruto Uzumaki was the Hokage's pick, and Shikamaru added Chōji Akimichi over Naruto's objections. With Shino Aburame away on assignment, Kiba Inuzuka and his partner Akamaru stepped in, and Rock Lee, unable to join himself, pointed them toward Neji Hyūga. Sakura Haruno asked to come along as they departed but was turned away, since force rather than persuasion was now the only path and that fell outside her strengths. The resulting five made for an unusually well-rounded unit.

Role

Shikamaru built a marching order that squeezed value from each member's talents in case of ambush. Kiba and Akamaru took point, tracking Sasuke's scent and reading the terrain for traps, with Shikamaru just behind to bark orders across a wider field of view. Naruto held the center to answer threats with his shadow clones, Chōji covered the opposite flank as the group's heaviest hitter, and Neji anchored the rear, sweeping their blind spots with his Byakugan.

The chase brought them up against Sasuke's escorts, the Sound Four. Shikamaru's opening gambit, feigning incompetence to bait the enemy into lowering their guard, briefly snared all four in his shadow, until Ukon's intervention broke the hold and Jirōbō sealed the team inside an earthen prison dome. They escaped, but the pursuit then forced them to peel away one at a time. Chōji stayed behind and slew Jirōbō at the cost of near-total exhaustion, Neji broke free of Kidōmaru's webbing and killed him but could go no further, and the rest pressed on after Tayuya, Sakon, and Ukon. Naruto and Shikamaru secured the coffin holding Sasuke, only for Kimimaro to snatch it away, and Sasuke soon emerged and set off toward Orochimaru alone. Rock Lee arrived to keep Kimimaro occupied, and with Kiba, Shikamaru, and Lee all on the brink of death, the timely appearance of the Sand Siblings turned the tide, Kankurō finishing Sakon and Ukon, Temari cutting down Tayuya, and Gaara holding Kimimaro off until illness claimed him.

Naruto tracked Sasuke to the Valley of the End. Unable to talk him into returning, the two fought, and Naruto ultimately could not bring himself to deliver a killing blow, collapsing while Sasuke, who had spared him despite the chance to do otherwise, walked on to Orochimaru. The mission ended in failure. Afterward the Medic Corps was dispatched to tend the wounded, Chōji and Neji were pulled back from grievous injuries, and Shikamaru, shaken enough to consider quitting, was steered by his father toward treating the disaster as a lesson. Recovered by Kakashi, Naruto later left to train with Jiraiya, determined to grow strong enough to bring Sasuke home. In the anime, a reincarnated Sound Four returned during the Fourth Shinobi World War to trap the team's souls in revenge, only for Naruto to locate the barrier and free his comrades.

Alongside him stood Naruto Uzumaki, Chōji Akimichi, Kiba Inuzuka with his ninken Akamaru, and Neji Hyūga, each chosen for a distinct combat role. Late reinforcement came from the Three Sand Siblings, Gaara, Temari, and Kankurō, whose backup the Hokage had requested. Shino Aburame, absent at the time, remained resentful for years that he had never been asked to take part.
