Summary

Sensing his chakra stir at the site, Asura works out that the God Tree's sap is what has been sickening the local people. The tree enriches the soil, but its residue collects in anyone who eats crops grown there. Since the village elder keeps the spot under guard, Asura and Taizo suspect he already knows the truth.

Key Events

Together with Kanna, they question the elder, who recalls how the land once suffered yearly droughts and mass starvation until the God Tree revived it. When Asura warns the villagers of the danger, they turn on him upon learning he hails from the village of Ninshu. Meanwhile Hagoromo and Gamamaru observe that both of his sons were sent to settlements facing the same crisis, and Indra concludes that his own villagers will never reach agreement among themselves.

Notes

Recalling his father's counsel, Asura resolves to save the village without felling the tree, however long it takes, and sets to digging a well with Taizo while Hagoromo holds off on his choice until Asura returns. A year later Asura comes back to the Land of Ancestors with some of the villagers, having won them over: once they grasped his plan, they dug alongside him, learned Ninshu, and found water that let them safely destroy the God Tree. With Gamamaru's account in hand, Hagoromo settles on his successor.
