Meeting (episode 257)

As a child, Naruto splashes paint across Konoha's homes and storefronts before fleeing, overhearing residents grumble about who will pay for the mess and remark that the boy has no parents to answer for him. Later, when the Third Hokage stops by to hand over his allowance, Naruto asks about the mother and father he never knew, saying all he has been told is that they perished during the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's attack. Hiruzen declines to say anything, insisting that talking about it would not restore the dead and would serve no purpose.

Years afterward at the Academy, Naruto encounters Sasuke and is beaten by him again and again. In one sparring bout he notices that Sasuke's gaze burns with a hatred aimed elsewhere, and he later learns that Sasuke alone survived the massacre of the Uchiha. Once they graduate, the two join Sakura on Team 7. Sasuke declares his aim to strike down a certain man and rebuild the Uchiha, while Naruto voices his dream of becoming Hokage. The three clear Kakashi's bell test and are made genin. Setting out for the Land of Waves on their first assignment, they are ambushed by the Demon Brothers, and with Kakashi appearing to fall, Sasuke steps up to fight and rescues Naruto.

Ashamed that fear had frozen him while Sasuke stayed composed, Naruto jams a kunai into his own hand and swears on the wound that he will never again be weak enough to need saving. Trivia notes that Naruto skips his usual attempt to attack Kakashi before the bell test in this retelling. The Academy fight in which Sasuke bests Naruto is lifted from chapter 538, though the episode does not otherwise adapt that chapter's story.
