Origin of Pain

Nagato carries his tale onward for Naruto, describing how chance brought the three Ame Orphans to the legendary Sannin and led Jiraiya to look after them. The sight of Jiraiya's Konoha headband made Nagato reject him at first, since it was Leaf ninja who had killed his mother and father, but time spent together turned the man into a teacher he respected. Everything changed the day a rogue ninja from Iwagakure ambushed Nagato and Yahiko. With his friend about to die, Nagato awakened his Rinnegan and struck the attacker down. Seeing the dōjutsu, Jiraiya chose to train all three in ninjutsu and privately told Nagato he saw in him the reborn Sage of Six Paths, the wielder of the Rinnegan who preached peace and mutual understanding.

Resolving to guard Yahiko and Konan, Nagato grew strong enough that Jiraiya eventually parted from them. The three roamed Amegakure and gathered fellow Ame ninja into the fledgling Akatsuki, an organization meant to end the war through peace. Hanzō, who ruled Ame, read them as a danger and lured them to talks under the guise of calming the strife between the lands of Fire, Wind, and Earth. The gathering was a snare set with Hanzō's forces and Danzō Shimura, whose Root operatives joined the ambush. Holding Konan captive, Hanzō tossed a kunai toward Nagato and told him to slay Yahiko to spare himself and Konan. As Nagato faltered, Yahiko lunged onto the blade himself, urging Nagato to protect Konan and naming him the world's true savior. With Yahiko dead, Hanzō ordered the rest killed as well. Fury overtaking him, Nagato called forth the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and used it to devour the souls of the assembled men, though the effort drove black chakra rods into his back and left him forever gaunt.

The episode belongs to Pain's Assault arc and adapts chapters 446 and 447. It first aired in Japan on August 12, 2010, and in English on March 30, 2013. The opening theme is A World That Was Transparent and the ending theme is Transient Fireworks.
