Kakashi puts Team 7 through the bell test, a survival exercise with a brutal failure rate, and the mismatched trio quickly discovers that pranks and reckless charges are no match for an elite jonin reading a book mid-fight.
In an Academy classroom, Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura wait on their tardy jonin instructor. To punish him for being late, Naruto balances an eraser atop the door, and to Sasuke's astonishment Kakashi walks straight into it, delighting Naruto and, secretly, Sakura. Kakashi promptly writes them all off as idiots. He has them introduce themselves, drawing out Naruto's dream of becoming Hokage, Sakura's blushing glances at Sasuke, and Sasuke's vow to kill a certain man. Kakashi then announces a survival test the next morning that will decide which of the twenty-seven graduates advance, warning of a 66 percent failure rate and telling them to skip breakfast so they do not throw up.
The team gathers at dawn, only for Kakashi to arrive late again with a flimsy excuse about a black cat. He sets the challenge: snatch one of two bells before noon, and whoever fails will be tied to a post and made to watch the others eat. Sakura works out that the skipped breakfast was meant to handicap them, and the three scatter to hide. Meanwhile, a concerned Iruka speaks with the Third Hokage, who shows him a record proving no team has ever passed under Kakashi. At the training ground, Naruto breaks cover and rushes in, but Kakashi calmly reads his Icha Icha book, dodges everything, and hits him with the One Thousand Years of Death. A shadow clone feint backfires when Kakashi uses the Body Flicker to turn Naruto's clones on each other, and a bell on the ground proves to be a trap that leaves Naruto dangling by a rope. As Kakashi lectures him, Sasuke seizes the moment to hurl shuriken and kunai from the trees, striking the jonin.
