Power to Believe

Konan and the Six Paths of Pain press their assault on Konohagakure, methodically questioning and killing shinobi and civilians alike to learn where Naruto Uzumaki, host of the Nine-Tailed Fox, is hidden. With Tsunade occupied by her duties as Hokage and Shizune running the autopsy, Sakura is left overseeing the wounded at the Konoha Hospital. Danzō Shimura chooses to warn the two council elders, Koharu Utatane and Homura Mitokado, that Pain is razing the village in pursuit of Naruto, whom Tsunade is at that very moment trying to bring home.

Furious, the elders burst into Tsunade's office and demand she leave Naruto at Mount Myōboku, unhappy with how she has managed the crisis. When they warn of the risk in surrendering the Nine-Tails to Pain, the man who murdered even Jiraiya, and dismiss Naruto as nothing but the beast's container, Tsunade snaps. Hauling them up by their collars, she insists he is no mere vessel but a shinobi of Konoha and a comrade sworn to protect it, recalling how he once saved her during her fight with Kabuto. She tells them the Third Hokage, Chiyo of Suna, and Jiraiya all held what the two of them lack: the power to believe in someone like Naruto. Far away at Mount Myōboku, Naruto has fully synchronized with nature and uses Sage Mode to refine a certain technique.

Shizune hurries in to report that chakra receivers were found inside the body Jiraiya had recovered, and that one is still active. Puzzled over why Pain feeds chakra to the other bodies, Tsunade orders the messenger toad Kōsuke to carry word to Naruto and Fukasaku, then heads for the roof. As the office empties and Kōsuke readies to send himself home, Danzō stabs and kills him to stop the Nine-Tails from returning. On the roof, Tsunade summons Katsuyu and has her split through the Slug Great Division into countless smaller slugs to heal the injured, vowing to defend the village. Elsewhere Pain's Deva Path interrogates Iruka, who refuses to give up Naruto's location and is rescued by Kakashi, who steps in to face the Deva Path himself.

This is Shippuden episode 158, part of Pain's Assault arc, adapting manga chapters 420, 421, and 422. It centers on the theme of faith that gives the episode its name and plants Danzō's secret betrayal in killing the messenger toad.
