Naruto, Sai and Yamato press their attack on the Kiri hunter-nin, whose Secret Technique: Mist Rain drains the chakra from Naruto's Rasengan while a water whip tears apart Sai's ink creatures. The unit's commander, Tsurugi, interrupts the fight. When Team 7 declines to trade Utakata for Hotaru, he floats a compromise: Utakata may stay until the mission ends, after which the team must surrender him to Kirigakure, warning that refusal could ignite a war between nations.

Yamato agrees, and Tsurugi requests a private word with Utakata, urging him to return home and insisting the village has shed its Blood Mist reputation and would not harm him since it needs the power sealed inside him. Utakata rejects the offer, recalling that the last person he trusted, his own master, ultimately tried to kill him. With the truce settled, the hunter-nin withdraw.

Traveling back toward Mount Katsuragi to rejoin Sakura and Tonbee, Hotaru wonders why Utakata will not become her teacher. Naruto describes his own bond with Jiraiya, admitting that with no parents of his own, traveling alongside his master gave him a taste of what having a father might feel like, and he assures Hotaru that willpower alone can make her his student. Hotaru suddenly buckles from pain in her shoulder, and Utakata, realizing the source is her back, sends Naruto for medicinal herbs. When Naruto returns he is stunned to see a scarred seal across her bare back, which Utakata identifies as the Tsuchigumo clan's forbidden technique carved into her, fueling his contempt for those who treat people as mere tools and vessels.

Part of the Six-Tails Unleashed arc, the episode uses the opening Sign and the ending For You. It premiered in Japan on February 11, 2010, and aired in English on October 9, 2012, deepening Utakata's backstory and his connection to Hotaru's burden.
