A heavy chapter of the Pain's Assault arc in which Naruto learns his mentor Jiraiya has fallen in Amegakure, while Sasuke's hatred hardens into a vow to raze Konoha for the memory of his brother Itachi.
The Akatsuki finish drawing the Six-Tails into the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, killing its host Utakata, and Tobi assures Konan that Sasuke's squad Taka has been trusted with capturing the Eight-Tails. At home, Naruto replays his final meeting with Itachi, who once sealed him inside a peaceful genjutsu to ask whether he would kill Sasuke if his friend ever turned against the village.
Naruto refused, insisting he would defend Konoha without taking Sasuke's life. Itachi called him a naive fool, arguing that shinobi must make brutal choices, yet still entrusted a crow carrying his own power to the boy before parting.
Battered and clutching his eyes, Sasuke returns to the hideout as Jugo carries the unconscious Karin and Suigetsu, and he hands Killer B's body to Madara before declaring he will heal his wounds and then destroy Konoha. In a remembered exchange, Sasuke names the two village elders and Danzo as the men who ordered Itachi to slaughter the Uchiha, his parents among them, and swears to butcher everyone who lived safely on his brother's sacrifice. Far off in Kumogakure, J reports to the Raikage that a Konoha-born Uchiha of the Akatsuki has abducted his brother.
Summoned by Tsunade, Naruto meets Fukasaku, Jiraiya's toad master, who reveals that Jiraiya died confronting Pain, the Akatsuki leader who proved to be his former student Nagato wielding the Rinnegan alongside five other bodies. Fukasaku bares the code Jiraiya carved into his own back before falling. Heartbroken, Naruto lashes out at Tsunade for sending him on the mission, then wanders home reliving memories of the toad sage who once compared him to the Fourth Hokage. A minor error has Tsunade place Jiraiya's meeting with the Ame orphans during the Third Shinobi World War when it actually happened in the Second, a mistake repeated in the Gutsy Ninja scroll episodes. The episode adapts chapters 403, 404, 405 and 416.
