Summary

Tsunade reads on through Jiraiya's book, where the Naruto that Hidan had cursed proves to be a shadow clone. The true Naruto steps forward with more duplicates and puts Hidan down. Yahiko then presents himself, Nagato, and Konan as a squad called Team Jiraiya to the members of Team Asuma, and the two groups begin trading blows. Black tendrils erupt behind Team Kakashi, and Hidan seizes the opening to wipe out Naruto's clones.

The tendrils lunge for Sakura, only for Naruto and Sasuke to cut them off. Team Jiraiya nudges Team Asuma in a chosen direction before breaking off the attack. Hidan slips away and rejoins Kakuzu, who is hauling a captured Kakashi; Kakuzu hands Kakashi over and departs to collect the other seized captains. Team Kurenai picks up traces of Team Asuma's earlier clash and gives chase, while Team Asuma stumbles onto a deserted village and Team Guy reunites with Team Kakashi to compare notes.

Spotting two children in the empty settlement, Team Asuma follows them, unaware Team Jiraiya is watching the same pair. When Team Asuma closes in, Yahiko strikes, Shikamaru counters, and the blow rattles Nagato badly enough that his surging power caves in a nearby house. The uproar draws the other teams. Team Jiraiya drops into the resulting sinkhole to reach the trapped children, and though Ino and Choji want to leap after them, Shikamaru holds them back.
