The Bridge to Peace

Konan pins Tobi inside a chasm made by her Paper Person of God Technique, having noted through their years as allies that his Kamui lasts only five minutes, which is why she rigged her paper's explosive tags to keep detonating for a full ten. Yet Tobi carries a Sharingan in his left socket and uses Izanagi to reappear behind her just as she believes him dead. Running her through with a metal rod, he answers her stunned questions by explaining Izanagi as a favor for her service to the Eye of the Moon Plan, comparing it to the Sage of Six Paths' Creation of All Things, and insisting that he is the one true Madara Uchiha, a second Sage in his own telling.

Pulling free of the rod, Konan staggers off and realizes the endless rain of Amegakure has ceased. A rainbow reminds her of Yahiko, who once said the rain made it seem the village was weeping, and she declares that Nagato and Yahiko lend her strength and that Naruto is the real bridge to peace. She hurls a Paper Chakram at Tobi, now down to a single eye and one arm, but he breaks through, chokes her, and traps her in a genjutsu to wring out Nagato's location as she dies. Tobi travels to Nagato and Yahiko's shrine, praising Nagato's mastery of the Rinnegan and noting how the strain drained the Uzumaki-red from his hair, then uses Kamui to carry Nagato's body into his own dimension. A sheet of Konan's blood-soaked paper drifts away on the water.

A remembered lesson from Jiraiya follows: the Water on a Frog's Face system, in which the Ame Orphans flipped a card to a frog when away from the hideout and to red when home, so a red card with no one present meant capture and a white card beside a present member meant an impostor had slipped in. Konan's memories fold in the birth of the Akatsuki, her first kiss with Yahiko, and the trio's vow to return one day with Jiraiya. The blood-red sheet finally settles onto Konan's own card, marking the four friends reunited in the afterlife. Shedding his ruined robe and mask, Tobi puts on new attire bearing the Uchiha crest and a Sharingan-patterned mask with two eye holes. Kabuto marks his new eye while Zetsu delivers a scroll from Kisame pinpointing the Nine-Tails, and Tobi announces they leave at once to capture it.

Konan's ten-minute trap fails against Tobi's Izanagi, and he claims outright to be Madara Uchiha. Her final Paper Chakram cannot stop him, and he kills her after extracting Nagato's location. Tobi takes Nagato's Rinnegan-bearing body into Kamui's dimension. The Ame Orphans are symbolically reunited when Konan's blood-marked paper reaches her card, and Tobi, newly outfitted, sets out to hunt the Nine-Tails.

The episode is part of the Fourth Shinobi World War: Countdown arc and adapts chapters 510 and 511; an alternate English title renders it A Suspension Bridge to Peace. It aired in Japan on March 8, 2012, and in English on August 2, 2014. Its opening theme is Newsong and its ending theme is By My Side. Continuity notes include a flashback in which Jiraiya uses the Rasengan against the Ame Orphans despite the technique's later timeline, Konan's Akatsuki ring vanishing in some shots, and Tobi's replacement outfit omitting the thumb ring, suggesting the rings no longer matter.
