Tsunade reads deeper into Jiraiya's tale as a masked stranger reveals himself to Neji, unraveling an old Hyūga wound and the reincarnation that staged the entire ordeal.
As Tsunade reads on, with Shizune bringing drinks to keep her company, the story reaches a startling turn: Neji names the masked man his father. The stranger explains that Team Jiraiya will guide Neji to the kidnapped shinobi, then departs to let the young genin regroup. Uniting as a single squad, the Konoha genin puzzle over how to locate the captives and are soon joined by Neji himself.
The masked figure appears before Team Jiraiya, Hidan, Kakuzu, and Sasori to announce the trial is finished. The Akatsuki members withdraw while Team Jiraiya is tasked with returning the displaced villagers home, along with one further instruction.
Neji finishes laying out the true nature of the exercise they were caught up in. Konan conjures paper butterflies to lead the genin to their captured teachers before leaving with her team, and the students free the imprisoned shinobi. When Kurenai asks about the strange events, the masked man offers to explain, then strips away his mask and bandages to reveal himself as a reincarnated Hizashi Hyūga. He recounts the Hyūga Affair and admits that a bandaged man brought him back, and that he orchestrated the incident to see whether his sacrifice had changed how Konoha conducts itself.
He and Neji talk through Neji's outlook and how his fight with Naruto reshaped it. Those words let Hizashi release his lingering attachments, and his soul is finally freed.
