The Fourth Hokage

Startled that the Fourth Hokage knows his name, Naruto listens as the man explains he embedded his own consciousness into the seal in case eight tails ever emerged, hoping it would never come to that. When Naruto grasps that this is his father, he weeps, then drives a fist into his gut, demanding to know why anyone would trap a tailed beast inside their own baby. He pours out the resentment of a childhood spent hated for his jinchuriki status and the fact that Akatsuki leveled Konoha chasing him.

The Fourth answers that he sealed half of the fox in Naruto because he trusted his son to master its power. He reveals that a masked man in Akatsuki robes had orchestrated the fox's assault on the village years earlier, and that he suspects the same figure is steering Pain's hatred. Aware of Jiraiya's death, he tells Naruto that neither he nor anyone else can hand him the answer to Pain's question about peace, but places his faith in Naruto to find it. He tightens the loosened seal, warns that he will not be able to do so again, and fades as his chakra runs out.

Team Guy reaches the village after a wounded Gamabunta warns them of the attack and pulls Hinata to safety. Pain is stunned to watch Naruto's eight-tailed form burst free of the Chibaku Tensei, then revert instantly to Naruto standing in Sage Mode. Katsuyu reassures Naruto that his rampage harmed no one, and he demands to speak with the true Pain. He stabs himself with a captured black receiver and channels natural energy through it to trace the real Pain's position.

Realizing he has only five minutes of Sage Mode left after his transformation dispelled his backup clone, Naruto fires two Rasenshuriken. Pain deflects one with Shinra Tensei and leaps clear of the other. A swarm of shadow clones then bursts from the rubble, and while Pain repels them during his recharge interval, the real Naruto slips through the opening to strike the exposed Deva Path with a Rasengan.

The episode adapts chapters 439 through 442 and sits within the Pain's Assault arc. It delivers one of the series' pivotal reveals, confirming Minato as Naruto's father and tying the Nine-Tails' assault on Konoha to the masked man behind Akatsuki.
