Summary

Under cover of darkness, a masked figure slips into the Kazekage's office building in Sunagakure. Kankurō confronts the intruder, who names himself one of the extremists demanding reform across the Land of Wind, then bolts. Cornered during the chase, the assassin moves to take Kankurō down with a suicidal strike, but Temari intervenes just in time to save her brother. The next morning, the siblings warn Gaara that his opponents are growing bolder, though the Kazekage refuses to buckle under the pressure.

At the same time, the main teams of the Konoha 11 reach the Demon Desert checkpoint in time to secure their spots, while stragglers who arrive too late are cut and sent home. Tempers flare at dinner when a Konoha shinobi accidentally spoils the food and a brawl erupts among the genin. The cheerful Fū turns up hoping to befriend the group, only to watch the others clear out of the cafeteria and leave her behind.

Key Events

Back in Konoha, Kakashi tells Tsunade he could not get inside Amegakure and grew wary after failing to meet Hanzō in person. Meanwhile, a hungry Chōji sneaks toward the jōnin quarters in search of food, trailed by Sakura and Ino, and the three are set upon by a giant scorpion. Fū saves them once again, and when Gaara arrives he notes how her natural charm mirrors Naruto's.

The following day, the second phase opens along the same lines as the earlier exams. Half the teams receive the Scroll of Earth and the other half the Scroll of Heaven, so every squad must claim its counterpart scroll to advance.
