The Steam Ninja Scrolls: Mirai's King!

Mirai remembers a report of Shikamaru's describing how Hidan spilled Asuma's blood to bind their bodies together and mirror wounds, the very technique that took her father's life. At the spring, the cult leader Ryūki hands the gathered women water and forbids them from drinking, claiming he can bridge the living and the dead and that Asuma longs to see his daughter. Mirai tests him by naming a shōgi master her father supposedly revered and after whom she was named, and when Ryūki eagerly confirms the tale, she exposes it as a fabrication, since no such player exists.

Realizing the spring's fumes have entranced the others, Mirai jolts them awake with a light burst of Lightning Release. Ryūki admits the missing women are meant to be offerings that will grant him eternal life. He nicks Tatsumi's cheek, links her blood to a puppet, and commands her to kill Mirai, taunting the young ninja for hesitating to strike an ordinary civilian.

Kakashi and Guy storm the spring, cutting through cultists along the way, and a thrown kunai knocks the cursed puppet from Ryūki's grip to free Tatsumi. Ryūki flees behind a screen of gas, but Mirai pursues him into a trap-laden ritual chamber. There he reveals his reverence for Hidan, whose legacy and the Way of Jashin he means to revive, dismissing the peaceful age as wasted. He appears to slash Mirai, taste her blood, and seize immortality, only for the whole scene to dissolve: it was her genjutsu, and the fluid he drank was merely the springs' iron-heavy water.

Channeling Asuma's spirit, Mirai strikes back with a wind-fueled counter and defeats him, and the cult is rounded up. On the way home the group explains that their true assignment was investigating the vanished girls while Mirai guarded them, with Kiba, Chōji, and Tenten quietly gathering intelligence as tourists. Mirai realizes they fed her every detail so she would write the mission report. Back in Konoha she tells Shikamaru she has cracked his riddle: the "king" stands for the generations still to come, and he needles her for not noticing her own name held the answer, and that she lost their shōgi match.

The chapter caps the Steam Ninja Scrolls arc, adapting the Konoha Shinden novel. It premiered in Japan on June 16, 2019, and reached English audiences on May 25, 2021. Its opening theme is Golden Time and its ending theme is Ride or Die.
