Summary
Sasuke and Naruto are worn down by Haku's endless flurry of strikes, yet the assault is landing less and less. Sasuke has started to trace Haku's blurring speed and even slip clear of the blows. Haku understands that a freshly opened pair of Sharingan is behind the shift, so he decides to finish Naruto first and make the rest of the battle simpler.

Off to the side, Zabuza has left Kakashi badly hurt and remarks that the two young genin are just as doomed, though Kakashi keeps his trust in them. When Naruto looks up, he discovers that Sasuke has thrown himself in the way of Haku's attack as a living shield. Sasuke cannot explain the impulse, and he grieves that he never got his chance to strike down Itachi before slumping into what looks like death. Overcome by the loss, Naruto swears to kill Haku.
