The second chapter of Naruto introduces the Third Hokage's mischievous grandson, Konohamaru, who latches onto Naruto as a mentor. Bonding over a shared dream of becoming Hokage and a shared frustration at being overlooked, the two rascals reach a surprisingly mature understanding.
As Naruto Uzumaki works toward his ninja ambitions, he crosses paths with the young Konohamaru right as the boy is botching an attempt on his own grandfather's life. Once that scheme fails, Konohamaru begs Naruto to take him on as a student, convinced that mastering the Sexy Technique will let him topple the Third Hokage and seize the title of Hokage for himself. Naruto, who harbours the same goal, asks what draws him to the position. Konohamaru confesses that everyone sees him only as the Third's grandson rather than as himself, and he believes earning the title would finally make people recognise him by his own name.
Understanding that struggle all too well, Naruto agrees to train him. Ebisu, the boy's tutor, dismisses the so-called Nine-Tails boy as a corrupting influence and moves to break up the lessons. Konohamaru unleashes his polished Sexy Technique on the tutor, but it does nothing; Naruto then answers with his Harem Technique, which floors Ebisu and exposes him as a lecher himself. Realising how much ground he still has to cover, Konohamaru severs his student-teacher arrangement, reasoning that leaning on Naruto to reach the top would make him unworthy of it.
Naruto first meets Konohamaru during the boy's failed strike against the Third Hokage. Konohamaru asks Naruto to train him so he can become Hokage and be known for himself. Ebisu tries to end the training but is undone by Naruto's Harem Technique. Konohamaru ends the arrangement, deciding he must earn the title on his own merits.
This early chapter belongs to the Prologue, Land of Waves storyline and was collected in Volume 1. It appeared in Weekly Shōnen Jump issue 44 of 1999, dated October 11. The Japanese title, like the character it names, is Konohamaru!!
