Naruto and Sasuke 1

Standing at the Valley of the End, Sasuke explains what he considers a genuine Hokage, tying it to Itachi and the history that bound his brother to Konoha. In his eyes Itachi embodied that ideal. He recounts his brother's misstep and the destruction of the Uchiha, and states his intent to take the pain and hatred of every shinobi onto himself. By carrying that burden alone, he claims, he can bring the villages under one hand and wipe the darkness from the world.

Naruto counters that nobody would ever consent to such a design, but Sasuke dismisses their opinions entirely, insisting he is the only one whose power can hold them all in check. Naruto reflects on his own past attempts to shoulder everything and recalls Itachi's warning that a person who forgets those who lent him strength, and tries to bear it all alone, ends up as arrogant as Madara.

He tells Sasuke plainly that he has misread what Itachi truly wanted, and that their shared struggle against Kaguya should have proven no one can manage everything by himself. Sasuke brushes the argument aside and restates his goal of cutting away the past. With no words left between them, the two throw themselves back into combat.

In the manga, as Naruto speaks of having learned from the people in his life, a panel displays Kakashi, Jiraiya, Hiruzen, Tsunade, Obito, and his parents Minato and Kushina; the anime keeps the line but omits those images. One panel mistakenly draws Naruto's right sleeve intact, an error left uncorrected in the tankobon. A Naruto: Color Edition of the chapter accompanied the digital release of the 2014 issue 45 of Weekly Shonen Jump.
