Chapter 3 sorts the new graduates into three-person teams and lands Naruto beside his crush Sakura and his rival Sasuke. Jealous of Sakura's attention to Sasuke, Naruto schemes to impersonate him, only for the ploy to backfire.
Fresh off passing his graduation test, Naruto Uzumaki arrives at the academy to learn which squad he will join. The roster places him with Sakura Haruno, the girl he adores, and Sasuke Uchiha, the classmate he treats as his measuring stick. Sakura groans at being stuck with Naruto while lighting up over Sasuke, which stings Naruto into cooking up a scheme.
At lunch he jumps Sasuke, binds him, and uses the Transformation Technique to take on his rival's shape. Posing as Sasuke, he sidles up to Sakura to fish for her honest opinion of him, but a sudden need for the bathroom pulls him away just before he can steal a kiss. In the meantime the real Sasuke works himself loose.
When the genuine Sasuke passes by, Sakura badgers him about their earlier moment, then starts running Naruto down and mocking him for being an orphan. Sasuke snaps back that her cruelty disgusts him, which shames Sakura into resolving to treat Naruto more kindly. Author Masashi Kishimoto later redrew this chapter's cover for chapter 185, a side-by-side that highlights how much his art had changed across four years.

We ranked the six most popular women of Naruto from worst to first, and our number one is going to start a fight. The official poll got it wrong....

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
