Side Story 1: Mission Start…!!

The story steps back to the days of the Third Shinobi World War. Obito Uchiha turns up late for the gathering and earns a scolding from his teammate, the young Kakashi Hatake. Having just risen to jōnin, Kakashi is showered with gifts by those around him: Rin Nohara hands him a custom medical kit, and their sensei, the man destined to become the Fourth Hokage, presents a special kunai, while Obito sheepishly admits he brought nothing at all. Named leader for the operation, Kakashi is charged with destroying the Kannabi Bridge to tip the war in the Leaf's favor against Iwagakure. As the squad moves through the Land of Grass, they sense an enemy shinobi shadowing them, and Kakashi decides to handle the threat with a technique of his own making, the Chidori.

The chapter launches the Kakashi Gaiden during the Third Shinobi World War. Kakashi's promotion to jōnin is celebrated with gifts from Rin and his sensei. The team is assigned to destroy the Kannabi Bridge. Kakashi debuts the Chidori against a watching enemy ninja.

The chapter forms part of the Kakashi Gaiden and appears in volume 27. Viz published it as Chronicle 1: The Mission Begins…!!. It introduces the younger versions of Kakashi, Obito, Rin, and their sensei ahead of the pivotal mission.
