Summary

Long before hidden villages existed, the Uchiha and the Senju were locked in ceaseless rivalry, a feud that spread the fame of both houses across the world. Drawing on what Itachi once told him, Sasuke asks whether Madara claimed his younger brother's eyes out of a hunger for glory and strength. Tobi confirms the eyes were taken, yet insists the brother surrendered them freely, hoping to secure the clan's future.

Key Events

Because of that resolve, Madara resisted the Senju's repeated overtures of peace, only to be overruled by his own kin. Konoha rose from the truce, and the office of Hokage passed to Hashirama Senju rather than to Madara. Convinced the Senju would eventually crush the Uchiha, Madara moved to seize control of the village. His attempt failed and he was thought dead, but from then on the Uchiha lived under a shadow of suspicion within Konoha.

Notes

When the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox struck the village sixteen years earlier, the leadership again pointed a finger at the Uchiha. Worn down by the constant distrust, the clan began scheming to seize the village for themselves, and that plot became the root of Itachi's tragedy.
