A grief-heavy chapter in the wake of Jiraiya's death. Naruto lashes out, then breaks down mourning the mentor who never saw him reach his dream, while Iruka reminds him the toad sage lives on through his student and Tsunade grieves alone.

Naruto, however, rounds on Tsunade for allowing Jiraiya to undertake so perilous a mission by himself, and when she offers no defence he storms off despite Sakura's pleas. He spends the day drifting through the village and grieving. A chance meeting with Iruka reveals that the whole village has finally come to acknowledge Naruto, and though Iruka offers to treat him at Ramen Ichiraku, Naruto turns it down.
By evening, popsicle in hand, Naruto sits in a park and weeps, aching that Jiraiya never lived to see him become Hokage. Iruka finds him and offers comfort, reminding him how proud Jiraiya always was and how the sage endures through the pupil he taught. Elsewhere, Tsunade hands Shikamaru the lone task of decoding Jiraiya's message, and though he balks Sakura insists he see it through. Later, in a private moment, Tsunade herself gives in to tears for Jiraiya, recalling their first meeting and her regret at never having returned his feelings sooner.
