Appearance

Standing at a great height, A O cuts an imposing figure with a long, squared-off face, deep-set eyes beneath heavy brows, and dark sideburns that stretch down to his chin. His wavy hair runs long and greenish, kept under a striped yellow-and-brown bandanna with a tricorn captain's hat layered on top, the hat marked by his crew's emblem of a white skull in an animal-style hood. He favors a dark blue shirt worn open, sleeves pushed up over a ruffled collar, and each ear carries an ornate piece set with three small jewels. A curved blade sized to match his frame serves as his weapon.

Personality

Devotion to Whitebeard defines him. When the old captain offered an escape route during the war, A O chose to stay and fight for Ace rather than flee through the opening cleared by Whitebeard's tremors, risking his own life in the process. His attachment to Ace ran deep enough that he addressed the young man fondly as Ace-chan and threw himself into the rescue without hesitation. When Luffy broke Ace free, A O celebrated alongside his fellow allies, overcome with joy.

History

Fewer than three years ahead of the Summit War, A O and his crew had attempted to push into Whitebeard's waters, only to end up pledged beneath him instead. At Marineford he joined forty-two other allied crews in storming the base to free Ace. Squard's betrayal briefly shook his faith, but once Whitebeard proved his loyalty, A O fought on against the Marines, later boarding the plaza with help from Little Oars Jr. and rallying behind Luffy. Ace's death at Akainu's hands turned his focus toward shielding Luffy, and after Shanks arrived to broker a ceasefire, A O withdrew from the field. In the anime he attended the funeral held for Whitebeard and Ace. Two years on, a clash with Edward Weevil, who was hunting down Whitebeard's old subordinates, ended in disaster: the A O Pirates were annihilated, their town reduced to flames, and A O himself left unconscious.
