Barbel is a towering catfish fish-man who once sailed under Rocks D. Xebec. A cautious voice within the legendary Rocks Pirates, he took part in their raids and was present for the infamous clash at God Valley before the crew scattered.
Enormous in scale, Barbel dwarfs even Big Mom, the tallest human on record, thanks to his broad, heavy frame. His face mirrors that of a catfish, complete with dark sensory whiskers, thick lips, and a flattened nose. Pale blonde hair sweeps back with a fiery flair, paired with lengthy sideburns. A plain light collared shirt and a strand of beads round out his look, and webbing connects his fingers as it does on all of his kind. Around thirty-eight years before the present, he is depicted with a clean-shaven scalp.
Though rarely vocal, Barbel showed a measured, wary streak. He openly doubted Rocks' scheme to wake the giants of the Galleila, reasoning that such beings would never bend to the captain's will. As a former crewman of Rocks, he is presumed to have shared the crew's notorious inability to get along with one another.
About forty-four years ago, Barbel fell in with Rocks D. Xebec around the time the captain seized Hachinosu. At a later gathering, Rocks laid out plans to hunt down two Devil Fruits, one tied to Elbaph and King Harald, prompting Barbel's skeptical remark about the Galleila giants. The crew then raided Foot Colony, a temple belonging to the International Philanthropy Federation, and only escaped when Edward Newgate's quake power nearly sank the island. Years on, Barbel joined the Rocks assault on God Valley, where the captive Shakuyaku was being held as a prize in the World Nobles' hunting contest. He was first to note that no single captive could be split among them like loot, and amid the battle he traded blows with rival pirates while Silvers Rayleigh slipped away with Shakky. Whether he lived through what became known as the God Valley Incident is uncertain, as the crew disbanded soon afterward. As a fish-man he wielded roughly ten times a human's strength, was a capable swimmer, and could haul a massive sack of treasure at a run.
Barbel's fate after the God Valley Incident is uncertain; the Rocks Pirates disbanded shortly after that clash, and what became of him afterward was never confirmed in the story.
