Appearance

An aged man of fairly tall stature, Rayleigh carries a strongly muscled, tan-skinned frame. Among his most recognizable features are the round spectacles he wears and the facial hair lining his lower jaw in a notched pattern, plus a scar crossing his right eye that he has borne for more than four decades. His everyday clothing stays plain, often just a simple shirt, shorts, and sandals, and in public he tends to throw on a large silver hooded cloak, the hood usually lowered. In his youth his hair was a neat strawberry blond, which whitened and lengthened with age as he grew out a beard.

Personality

Easygoing, playful, and principled, Rayleigh in his later years strongly recalls his old captain Roger. During his time as first mate he was the sterner one, impatient and disciplined, quick to lose patience with the younger hands and the only member of the crew who did not go weak at the sight of Shakky. The years since the crew broke up have softened him considerably. He prefers to think a situation through before acting, yet keeps his composure even when a plan goes awry, whether squaring off with a Marine admiral or watching his ship sink in Sea King waters. A fatherly streak shows around Luffy and Hancock, and he is fully capable of fury, glaring at Blackbeard and calling him a brat when the Emperor threatened Hancock. He enjoys talking over the past, though he grows guarded around the subject of the Void Century, and he freely admits his body no longer performs as it once did. By his own account he is fond of drink and of women, and he likes to be addressed as Ray-san.

Abilities

Hailed as a living legend and ranked among history's mightiest pirates, Rayleigh is spoken of in the same breath as Roger and his fellow crewman Scopper Gaban. His renown alone carried weight; Garp cautioned the Marines against challenging him, and his reputation was enough to make Blackbeard pull out of Amazon Lily. In direct combat he fought Admiral Kizaru to a standstill and shielded the Straw Hats, though he concedes that age now tires him. He is a sharp, cunning thinker who slipped past the World Government for over twenty years and turned Sabaody's slave trade to his own profit. Physically he retains tremendous power, having slain Sea Kings with his bare hands, and his speed and reflexes remain formidable. As a swordsman he drew blood from Kizaru's face by layering Armament Haki over his blade. Rayleigh stands among the rare few who wield all three forms of Haki, with masterful command of Supreme King Haki, and he proved an able instructor, grounding Luffy in every variety during their training.
