Appearance

A fairly tall crossdresser, Bentham favors showy ballet outfits built around a swan motif, typically a pink overcoat layered over blue medieval-style garments. He cakes on heavy makeup and tends to flash a broad grin that carries over even when he changes faces. His exposed legs are hairy, but the body beneath the costume is solidly muscled from his martial training. As a Baroque Works agent his number appears in his look, with his paired swans bent into the shape of a 2.

Across his various missions he has worn many guises, from the robes of Nefertari Cobra to the prison rags and bandaged outfits of Impel Down, plus the borrowed faces of Hannyabal and Magellan. Two years later, reigning as Newkama Land's queen, he sports a refreshed version of his ballet wear featuring larger wings and a furry collar.

Personality

Bentham is theatrical to the bone, forever singing, dancing, and spinning to the irritation of his fellow agents. Assassin though he is, he prizes friendship over everything, a value he proved by sacrificing himself so the Straw Hats could flee Arabasta when Hina cornered them, by attacking Hina again to save Miss Valentine, and finally by risking his life to open Impel Down's Gates of Justice. He is intensely selfless and proud of it, framing such deeds as loyalty to the okama way. He ends sentences with a feminine "wa yo" and is fond of the catchphrase "Jodan janai wa yo." Despite the friendships he forms, he still fought Vivi during the clash at Alubarna.

History

Born in the East Blue, Bentham at some point came across and devoured the Mane Mane no Mi. This Paramecia power lets him become a perfect double of anyone whose face he touches with his right hand, copying not only the face but the whole body and voice, and reverting with a touch of his left. Paired with his mastery of the dance-based fighting art Okama Kenpo, the fruit makes him a formidable trickster. Recruited into Baroque Works, he carried out key tasks for Operation Utopia, including imprinting Cobra's face. The Straw Hats first met him while escorting Vivi home, and his antics charmed Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper before they learned he was an enemy agent.

During the Arabasta Arc he impersonated Cobra to incite the populace, dueled Sanji in a fierce battle, and ultimately stayed behind with his crew, disguised as the Straw Hats, to lure Hina's forces away so the Going Merry could escape. Imprisoned afterward, he resurfaced in Impel Down, where he reunited with Luffy and fought at his side toward Level 5 to seek Emporio Ivankov. He cheered Luffy through his agonizing recovery, then made his greatest sacrifice, disguising himself as Magellan to throw open the Gates of Justice so everyone could flee before facing the real warden without regret. He survived the ordeal, was re-imprisoned, and two years on rose to become Newkama Land's new queen.
