Appearance

Slender and strikingly tall, Hancock stands apart from her oversized younger sisters with a more classical build. Jet-black hair worn in a hime cut spills past her waist, framing pale skin, long-lashed dark eyes, and a high forehead, while golden serpent earrings dangle at her ears. Her wardrobe shifts constantly across her appearances, ranging from a daring red Kuja blouse and sarong with a Marine-style epauletted cape to the purple gown she dons for the war at Marineford; after the timeskip the palette turns blue in the manga though it stays red in the anime. Per Oda, she measures 191 centimeters. She is rarely without Salome, the enormous smiling snake she lounges upon, and concealed beneath her hair and cape is the slave brand of the Celestial Dragons, a mark she guards with lethal secrecy.

Personality

On the surface Hancock comes across as vain, imperious, and certain that her looks let her do as she pleases, since admirers of every age and gender forgive her every cruelty. Faced with Luffy's total immunity to her charm, she would dramatically collapse whenever insulted, unable to accept someone beyond her reach. Underneath the swagger sits a woman scarred by years of bondage, who built her arrogance and the fabricated Gorgon curse as armor against ever being controlled or shamed again. She holds a fierce distrust of men, with Luffy and Rayleigh standing as her only exceptions, and treats the World Government as an enemy regardless of her Warlord title. Her sisters, Gloriosa, and Salome draw out her tenderness, and Luffy's selflessness thaws her completely, leaving her flustered, blushing, and fixed on the idea of marrying him no matter how often he declines.

History

Snatched by World Nobles as a girl alongside Sandersonia and Marigold, Hancock was enslaved and abused at Mary Geoise, where her captors force-fed her the Mero Mero no Mi for amusement. The mass uprising sparked by Fisher Tiger set the sisters free, and with aid from Gloriosa, Silvers Rayleigh, and Shakuyaku they made it home, where Hancock rose to become empress and later one of the Seven Warlords. To hide their brands from the Kuja, the trio spread the tale of a curse earned by slaying a Gorgon. When Luffy washed up on Amazon Lily she first ordered his death, but his refusal to expose her secret, his strike against a Celestial Dragon, and his open scorn for slavers won her over and left her stricken with love sickness. She agreed to escort him into Impel Down, fought on his behalf during the Summit War of Marineford, and afterward gave him Rusukaina as a training ground for two years before helping reunite him with his crew. Holding a starting bounty of 80,000,000 berries that was frozen during her Warlord tenure, she saw it reinstated at 1,659,000,000 once the system was scrapped at the Levely, making her a wanted criminal again; Vegapunk later cloned her into the Seraphim S-Snake. When the Marines and Blackbeard stormed her island, she refused to surrender and was rescued by Rayleigh's intervention.

Hancock ranks among the strongest of the Kuja and commands respect from allies and foes alike. The Mero Mero no Mi petrifies anyone who feels attraction toward her, turning whole crews to stone through heart-shaped projectiles or a touch, and she can reverse the effect with a kiss. She is one of the rare fighters able to wield all three forms of Haki, delivers devastating Armament-laced kicks capable of shattering Pacifistas, and is a cunning strategist and master deceiver who manipulated Magellan and the prisoners of Impel Down to her ends.
