Brief

A middle-aged man of fairly short stature, Brief has brown hair and a slim toothbrush mustache. He keeps a beige safari helmet ringed by a dark-brown band on his head and never removes his heavy black eyeglasses. Underneath a black jacket trimmed with yellow shoulder pads he wears a white shirt and bow tie, lending him a formal air.

Brief reads as a gentle, good-hearted soul, though his prolonged stay on the so-called vacation island has clearly worn on him. The loss of his crew left him lonely, and he repeatedly invited Luffy to join him, always to no avail. Even after being turned down, his compassion held: he pulled Luffy out of his grief and stood with him to topple the Baron, the captain of the Mustache Pirates valuing connection over solitude.

Living as an uninvited resident of Omatsuri Island, Brief first watched the Straw Hats from hiding during the Goldfish Dipping game. He approached Luffy, pitched membership in the Mustache Pirates, and cautioned him about the Baron. He rescued Luffy from capture during the Shooting game and again as the Baron nearly killed him. It later emerged that his own crew had fallen prey to the Lily Carnation and that he had once pleaded for his life, but he refused to let the same fate claim Luffy's crew, snapping Luffy out of despair and drawing the Baron's attention so Luffy could close in on the monstrous plant. As a captain he is presumed to hold reasonable fighting or leadership ability, and he proves notably skilled at digging tunnels. He later appears as a spectator at the Pirates Festival on Delta Island in One Piece: Stampede.
