Appearance

Caribou is a towering, dark-skinned man whose shoulder-length hair includes the wet-looking tuft that gave him his nickname, with a spiral beard curling up from his chin. His eyes are ringed with many circles, his ears taper to points, and a long tongue often lolls out. A fur-lined coat hangs cape-style over his shoulders above dark trousers, and his exceedingly long sleeves swallow his arms, making the shirt look like an unfastened straitjacket. Later phases of his story put him in a fluffy winter coat, then a revolutionary's jacket and starred beret, and finally striped prisoner's garb with cuffs and sandals.

Personality

Wildly violent, Caribou is infamous for burying people alive, Marines above all, and he wraps his killings in piety, praying to a god he claims to serve while begging forgiveness for those who cross him. Greedy, lecherous, and hungry for the fame of slaying important figures, he readily traffics captives and leers at women. Yet beneath the menace sits a coward who flees any fight he deems too risky, abandoning even his own brother and crew to save his own skin, and who swears phony oaths of loyalty whenever he is cornered. His cover-story arc with the old woman Baburu showed flickers of conscience, as he returned to protect her at real personal cost. He laughs with a signature "Kehihihi."

History

As children, Caribou and his brother were told by their grandmother to always stay close, and inspired by Marshall D. Teach they founded the Caribou Pirates, with Caribou earning a 210,000,000 bounty largely by killing Marines. He swallowed the Numa Numa no Mi, a Logia fruit that lets him become and command a bottomless swamp, storing weapons, captives, even an entire factory inside himself, though his real body is fragile and falls in a single Haki-laced blow. At Sabaody the two brothers signed on with the Fake Straw Hat Crew, planning to murder the genuine Straw Hats from within, then later buried the impostors and chased the real crew toward Fish-Man Island, where Luffy stopped him from abducting Shirahoshi after he raided the Ryugu Palace treasury. Pekoms flattened him with one punch, and Jinbe hauled him to the Marines.

His cover story carried him to a winter island, where Baburu nursed him and he led a revolt against the Beasts Pirates before X Drake captured him. Sent to the Prisoner Mine in Wano, he eventually aided Luffy and the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance, even handing over gathered food during the Fire Festival. After Onigashima fell, Luffy let him ride the Thousand Sunny to Egghead, where he begged Van Augur and Catarina Devon to take him to Blackbeard, intending to trade intelligence about the Ancient Weapons, including Pluton's hiding place in Wano.
