Diez Barrels began as a well-regarded Marine officer before deserting for a pirate's life, going on to captain the Barrels Pirates across the North Blue. Thirteen years prior to the present, a botched attempt to sell a Devil Fruit to the Marines ended with Doflamingo killing him. He was the parent of X Drake.
Tall and fair-skinned, Barrels drew the eye with a prominent chin, a pointed nose, and small ears. His short orange hair, combed straight back and mirroring his son's, featured a sharp widow's peak and sideburns. For dress he chose a dark buttoned shirt beneath a pale pirate-style coat.
While he wore the Marine uniform, Barrels was a man others admired, his son Drake foremost among them. Piracy changed that, bringing out cruelty and the beatings he inflicted on Drake. He was naive as well, agreeing to hand the Ope Ope no Mi over to the Marines in a sale; he saw that the fruit had worth, but never realized it could bestow immortality, and Doflamingo derided him as a fool for failing to grasp its true value. So consuming was his lust for profit that, once Rosinante took the fruit, he disregarded his injuries and fixed entirely on reclaiming it.
In earlier days Barrels stood as a highly respected Marine officer with a wife and a son, Drake, who admired his work. For undisclosed reasons he turned his back on the Marines, grew into a notorious pirate, and assembled his own crew, beginning to abuse his son around that period. He came into possession of the Ope Ope no Mi and arranged to swap it with the Marines on Rubeck Island for five billion Berries, setting up shop in an abandoned settlement on Minion Island.
One evening, as his crew drank and weighed the fruit's potential, Donquixote Rosinante stormed the hideout, snuffing out the lights and applying his silencing power so Barrels could neither spot nor hear him. A kick caught Barrels in the face, and the fruit was taken. He waved off his subordinates' efforts to treat his wounds and ordered them to retrieve it. Doflamingo then turned up and trapped the island within his Birdcage. Barrels cursed Drake for running off in their darkest moment, and when Doflamingo entered the hideout, Barrels charged him with the theft. Doflamingo brushed the accusation aside, mocked him for losing the fruit, gunned him down, and parked himself on the body. Afterward the Marines remembered Barrels only as a disgrace, and even Drake shed every trace of love and respect for him, holding no grudge against Doflamingo and eventually commanding SWORD.

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
