Donquixote Mjosgard

Born a World Noble of the Donquixote line, Donquixote Mjosgard began as a typical Celestial Dragon who treated fish-men as property. A disastrous voyage to reclaim escaped slaves brought him before Queen Otohime, whose compassion remade him into one of the few nobles willing to die defending the people he once scorned.

Appearance

In his younger days Mjosgard wore the look common to his caste, with dark green hair gathered into an updo. A broad face held a bulbous, often runny nose, thick lips, and narrow slits for eyes, while a missing front tooth showed through the smug grin he usually kept. Out among the public he donned the standard protective white suit of a noble, knobbed with medals and sealed inside an air bubble, and he reached Fish-Man Island battered and bleeding from his journey.

Surviving that ordeal softened his features over the following decade. He slimmed down, his jaw sharpened, and he kept his mouth shut except when speaking. Stubble appeared on his face, his eyes darkened, and beneath the protective suit he now wore a simple collared shirt of light purple.

Personality

A decade before his death, Mjosgard embodied everything expected of a Celestial Dragon, imagining himself a god entitled to take whatever he wished from his inferiors and reserving particular contempt for fish-men and merfolk. Though a legal settlement had already freed his slaves, he insisted on reclaiming them because of the sums he had paid, and he sailed for Fish-Man Island convinced of his own invincibility, blind to the perils of the deep. Even after his crew perished and grave wounds left him helpless, he still demanded that the fish-men nurse him and hand back his property, and once he understood they could kill him without repercussion he panicked yet stayed defiant.

Otohime's words during their journey to Mary Geoise transformed him completely. He gave up owning slaves and came to despise the conduct he had once shared with his peers. When the queen's family attended the Levely, he sided with them against his own caste, even clubbing Saint Charlos and vowing to answer for any fallout, a stance that carried a death sentence. He guarded his merfolk allies shrewdly, forbidding the Neptune Family from raising a hand against nobles so the law could not touch them, and instead turning to outlaw pirates for muscle.

History

The roots of his change trace back ten years, when Jinbe's acceptance among the Seven Warlords forced his household to surrender the fish-man slaves it owned. Unwilling to write off the fortune he had spent, Mjosgard set sail for Fish-Man Island to drag his former captives back into service. Creatures of the Sea Floor wrecked his vessel along the way, and he washed up as the lone survivor, badly hurt and barking orders for a mask and a doctor. The slaves he had abused gathered to finish him while bystanders agreed to keep the killing quiet, but Queen Otohime threw herself in front of the bullet and urged her people to end the long feud of hatred dividing their races. Ungrateful, Mjosgard turned his gun on her, only for Shirahoshi's cry to summon a swarm of Sea Kings and frighten him into unconsciousness.

Weeks of treatment restored him, and he was permitted to return to Mary Geoise. Otohime insisted on traveling with him to address the World Nobles, and somewhere along that voyage his heart turned, leaving him with genuine respect for the queen and securing written consent for humans and fish-men to one day coexist. Ten years later, when Charlos tried to seize Shirahoshi at the Levely, Mjosgard floored him with a club, demanded the princess be released, and pledged to stand at her side for the duration of the gathering.

Charlos made a second attempt with the help of Bartholomew Kuma, and Mjosgard again intervened, steering the Ryugu princes away from the fight and entrusting the strike to the pirates Sai and Leo so no kingdom would bear the blame. His defiance ultimately cost him everything: during the events at Egghead he was crucified and put to death by Figarland Garling, head of the Knights of God, for shielding Shirahoshi from his fellow noble.
