Hamu

Hamu looks like any small village boy. A wooly green-and-beige top sits over brown trousers, and his gray boots are kept fastened with bits of string. Shaggy brown hair tops a face set with a pair of oval eyes.

Courage drives the boy. He wants the beasts that ravage his town gone and their reign of suffering ended, a resolve sharpened by his mother's death when she gave her own life to confront Captain Joke. Aware that he cannot prevail alone, Hamu goes looking for friends strong enough to bring Joke down, and that hope is finally answered when the Straw Hats wash into his world.

For ten years, monsters loosed when Joke plundered the mountain of the Gods tormented Hamu's village. His mother, the village chief, fell trying to halt the pirate, planting in the boy a hatred of pirates and leaving him under Meroie's care. Hoping for outside help, Hamu took to releasing bottled notes on the island's rising air currents. One drifted to Monkey D. Luffy, who, while hunting treasure, dropped into the Ocean's Navel together with Zoro and the Going Merry.

At first the boy fled the strangers on learning they were pirates, but Luffy's pledge to help, plus a rescue from a giant sea urchin, gradually earned his trust, with Luffy urging him to show what he could do if he hoped to win companions. In the inner chamber that held the treasure, Joke's skeleton reanimated, and the revived captain forced Hamu to relive his mother's death. As Joke moved to slay him, the boy called out for her; the treasure blazed, her spirit rose, and together they landed the killing blow while the Straw Hats held Joke in place. With Joke finished, Hamu chose to guard his village instead of chasing revenge, and the crew slipped off before he ever learned their names.
