A giant who walked away from the Marines, Jaguar D. Saul washed up on Ohara and risked everything to shield a young Nico Robin during its destruction. Long believed dead after Kuzan froze him, he survived, smuggled Ohara's books to Elbaph, and took up teaching history at the Walrus School.
Being a giant, Saul towers many times over an ordinary human. Orange hair frames a broad beard that wraps nearly all the way around his face, calling to mind a lion's mane. He once wore the coat of a high-ranking Marine but cast it aside after deserting; when he crashed onto Ohara he had on a black shirt and worn gray jeans, and he traded his Marine cap for a cowboy hat. Years on, the Ohara disaster left him with a wide scar over his eyes, a thicker braided mustache, and a wooden peg in place of his right foot.
Saul is a warm, somewhat bashful giant who answered to his conscience rather than blind duty. He questioned his superiors more than once, and in the end he could not stomach an order to wipe out a clan of unarmed scholars, which pushed him to defect. He is famous for an odd, clumsy laugh, and he loves to see others laugh as well, which is why he coaxed Robin into doing so. A steadfast friend, he willingly throws himself against foes far stronger than he is and charges into fire to keep children from harm.
Saul hailed from the South Blue, joined the Marines, and climbed all the way to Vice Admiral. His vessel intercepted the ship of Ohara's archaeologists, and his crew slaughtered all but Nico Olvia. Tapped as one of five officers to spearhead the Buster Call on Ohara, he grew sickened by the order and freed Olvia, defecting from the World Government. A storm soon left him adrift, and he drifted onto Ohara, where he befriended Nico Robin over several days while building a raft and warned her of the coming attack.
When the Buster Call struck, Saul hurled Marine battleships in Robin's defense and promised Olvia he would protect her daughter. Kuzan ultimately froze him in place, but not before he told Robin to flee and one day find friends who would stand by her. He endured the ice, which later melted and carried him into the sea. In the years that followed he led Elbaph's giants in recovering the books Ohara's scholars had sunk in a lake, hid among the giants, and, at King Harald's request, founded and taught at the Walrus School. During the Elbaph Arc he reunited tearfully with Robin, welcomed the Straw Hats, and fought the God's Knight Shepherd Sommers in defense of the children.
