Years earlier, Danbo and Battler had been colleagues, the two of them working side by side as fellow zoologists. When Danbo resolved to survey the animals of O-Kan Island, he boarded a boat with his son Mobanby and made the journey. Battler, who had learned the island held a horned creature said to grant power enough to shake the world, assumed Danbo was hunting for it and trailed his old partner there. The two came to blows, and Battler killed him. His name, though only partly given, can still be made out from the signature he left in a logbook recovered from the ruins of his cabin.
