Tall and leanly muscled, Marco wears a perpetually drowsy expression and a dusting of stubble around his chin. His short blond hair juts upward in a shape that Robin and Luffy compare to a pineapple. He typically goes about in an open purple jacket cinched by a light blue sash and an ornate golden belt, paired with gray knee-length trousers, black sandals, and a straw band around one leg. Across his otherwise bare chest sits a tattoo of a crescent and cross that resembles Whitebeard's flag. Early in the anime he was first drawn as a plain dark-haired crewman before his design was brought in line with the manga.

Marco usually meets danger with a steady, unflustered calm. The rare cracks in that composure trace back to Whitebeard. The clearest instance came when he watched a deceived Squard run his captain through; the sight shattered his usual cool, and he flew straight over to ram the traitor's skull into the figurehead of the crew's vessel. He has a sharp instinct for sensing power, picking up on Shanks' Conqueror's Haki before any other crewman and noticing Luffy's hidden potential, and he cares deeply for his comrades, warning them clear of Shanks' aura. A veteran of three decades in the New World, he stepped naturally into leadership after Marineford, and he carries a streak of playfulness besides.

As the former first division commander, Marco oversaw the 1,600 members ranked beneath him and held Whitebeard's deepest trust as his right hand. His bounty reaches 1,374,000,000 berries, and the Five Elders singled him out by name among the few forces still able to bring down Blackbeard. He consumed the Tori Tori no Mi, a Mythical Zoan power of the Phoenix model that turns him into a phoenix or a human-phoenix hybrid, granting flight along with taloned legs for striking. From anywhere on his own frame he can conjure blue "Flames of Resurrection" that heal him from nearly any wound, letting him regenerate like a reborn bird. His grip proved strong enough to restrain two Ancient Zoan All-Stars at once.
