Appearance

Maynard is a brawny, broad-chested man whose dark hair is gathered into a ragged ponytail that juts off to one side, and he sports a dark beard and mustache. For the colosseum he took on a gladiator getup: a dark red cap pulled over sunglasses, a band around his left thigh that sheathed a knife, briefs with a studded belt, and tall studded sandals rising near his knees. Once he returned to Marine service, he donned the customary coat reading "Justice" across the back and swapped to a cap marked MARINE, dark in the manga but white in the anime.

Personality

Driven by a firm sense of justice, Maynard set out to expose Doflamingo's crimes to the world once he had slipped free of the colosseum. He defied his orders to infiltrate the tournament, drawing a reprimand from Vice Admiral Bastille, and was taken aback when Admiral Issho chose to look past Doflamingo's misdeeds. As a Marine he counts every pirate an enemy and attacks them without hesitation.

History

Operating as fighter number 0429 under the alias "Capman," Maynard relayed the competitors' names to his fellow Marines until Gambia caught on to him. He swiftly beat the pirate down, dumped him in the garbage room, and phoned in to scratch the name off the list. Shortly before B Block opened, Bartolomeo turned the tables and left Maynard unconscious in that same room. After Doflamingo sealed Dressrosa inside his Birdcage, Maynard rejoined his colleagues, urged Issho to arrest the pirate, and was told to follow orders instead. He went on to lead Marines in restoring calm in the town of Primula, then broadcast an account of the events to neighboring nations, even capturing Issho's public apology on a visual transponder snail. When Luffy fled with Rebecca, he ordered a pursuit that collapsed as his men buckled under the strain of donating their strength to heal the citizens.
