A drawn-out face, jutting chin, and large nose give McGuy a distinctive profile, sharpened by a firm jawline. Wavy blond locks fall to his waist, and his black moustache is twisted into the zigzag shape of a lightning bolt. Over a blue shirt with loose, frilled sleeves he wears a dark vest. Since the manga rarely showed his lower half, the anime filled in the gap, dressing him in dark bermuda shorts with an orange sash clasped by a silver ornament bearing a red gem.

The manga reveals little of his character, yet what it shows points to deep regard for Whitebeard: rather than flee down the escape route his own powers had opened, McGuy stood his ground, marked by loyalty and a courteous manner. The anime sharpens this picture, depicting him as sharp enough to read Sengoku's scheme to bait the pirates into the Pacifista's line of fire. When Whitebeard fell, McGuy wept openly.

McGuy built a fearsome name across the New World and earned a place among Whitebeard's allies. His keen judgment let him grasp why Whitebeard ordered the crews to scatter and avoid being penned in by the Pacifista, and he came through the war unhurt. He fights as a swordsman, favoring a saber, and although his precise skill is unstated it is assumed to rank high. He can somehow run electricity along his blade to amplify its bite, an unexplained trick that likely inspired his Thunder Lord title. The anime gave him a duel in which he held his own against Vice Admiral Doberman, stalling the officer.

His crew first appeared among a fleet of more than forty notorious bands rallying under the Whitebeard Pirates to storm Marineford and save Ace. When Squard, deceived by Akainu, stabbed Whitebeard, McGuy was stunned. On Whitebeard's command, he and the other allied New World captains covered Luffy and Ivankov as the pair pressed toward the execution platform. He cried again when the Blackbeard Pirates struck Whitebeard down, and the arrival of Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates left him astonished. After Shanks called for a ceasefire, McGuy departed the battlefield with the rest. In the anime's non-canon aftermath, he later attended the funeral held for Whitebeard and Ace on an unnamed New World island, a presence the manga never confirms.
