Appearance

Several deep markings define this officer's features: four crossed scars sit on his face, with two more along the throat, and his left eye is missing its pupil entirely. Long brown locks fall to his shoulders, framed by a divided, curling mustache. His Marine cloak hangs cape-style and carries far more ornamentation than those of his peers, while his cap bears a jagged zig-zag band. Beneath the coat he favors garb echoing seventeenth-century naval dress, a billowy shirt trimmed with cord-like accents over tailored trousers. The coat began as red at his introduction, though the anime later switched it to white for the Marineford fighting.

In his younger days as a fresh recruit, his jaw carried softer lines and his hair sat shorter. He still had both pupils at that time and bore only one X-shaped mark under his left eye. His face has often been compared to a Daruma doll because of the matching mustache and single visible pupil.

Personality

Doberman treats the Marines' cause as something to defend by any means, showing no mercy to those branded enemies. He saw no shame in parading the corpses of fallen pirates, pushing to display the heads of both Whitebeard and Ace to the entire world after Marineford. Always scanning for tomorrow's dangers, he flagged Luffy as a grave future threat upon learning he was Dragon's son and wielded a conqueror's will. He proved willing to carry out orders he knew were fraudulent, recognizing Spandam's lie about Aokiji yet attacking Robin regardless.

His hunger to wipe out pirates ran deep enough that he commanded his men to abandon their wounded rather than let foes slip away. Even so, he did not fully ignore his own side, raising a question to Jaygarcia Saturn about whether every Cipher Pol agent on Egghead truly had to be sacrificed. When Saturn dismissed human lives as no more meaningful than insects, Doberman fell silent, exposing a deference toward the Elders. He regarded Rob Lucci as a peerless assassin, convinced no one else was needed to secure Robin. Outside his calls for slaughter he stays composed and unshaken, neither rattled by Lucci's defeat nor by the looming bulk of Little Oars Jr.

History

Doberman was among the five Vice Admirals who unleashed the Buster Call on Enies Lobby, briefing his troops on Lucci's history and insisting the assassin alone could handle Robin's recapture. He then acted on Spandam's deceptive order to strike at her. During the Summit War he sliced apart cannon fire alongside fellow flag officers, marveled at the size of Little Oars Jr., and held his ground when Whitebeard scattered the Marines. He pressed his men to disregard the injured and chase the retreating crews, and when Shanks halted the war and claimed the bodies of Ace and Whitebeard, Doberman objected before reluctantly standing down once Sengoku agreed.

Two years afterward he resurfaced at New Marineford, uneasy about an intercepted exchange between Big Mom and Kaido. During the Egghead Incident he was one of nine Vice Admirals encircling the island under Kizaru and Saturn, feeding intelligence to Saturn and endorsing the sinking of fleeing researcher vessels. He questioned whether the trapped Cipher Pol agents could be discarded and was told their lives meant nothing. He rushed to aid Saturn after Bonney's stab, only to be brushed aside, and later urged his fellow officers to hunt Bonney down to reclaim the Pacifista. In the aftermath he asked Saturn whether Vegapunk's broadcast held any truth, and the Elder answered that insolence by striking him down, leaving Doberman gravely wounded.
