Nelson Royal is a non-canon Marine officer who runs the 8th Branch in the East Blue and carries the informal title of Teitoku. Greedy and obsessed with eternal life, he serves as the secondary villain of the Warship Island Arc.
Nelson's defining trait is his enormous bulk: so heavy that walking is impossible, he must be hauled around on a great chair borne by half a dozen men. A blue Marine emblem is inked across his vast belly, his rounded cheeks bear red spiral marks, and his thin brows are kept small and curled in the noble fashion. He sports a long, curling mustache and crowns himself with a tall blue cap made just for him. A Marine coat with green epaulettes, purple trim, matching striped trousers, white shoes, and a gem-set gold necklace round out the look. He is rarely without a folding fan, which he flutters against the sweat his size brings on.
Self-serving to the core, Nelson cares only for his own comfort and refuses to entertain anyone who crosses him. His soldiers mean nothing to him; he will gladly endanger them, as when he ordered every ship to fire on a rowboat carrying three of his own men simply because Eric had betrayed him. He screams at his crew, gorges himself to the point of choking, and shows no shame, once spitting food across Eric's face without a flicker of embarrassment. Although the Marine seagull marks nearly everything he owns, he holds no regard for justice, twisting his authority toward private ends like abducting a child. He has a verbal tic of capping his sentences with an old-fashioned 'de o-jaru'.
Chasing the thousand-year dragon known as Ryu to claim immortality, Nelson hired the mercenary Eric to handle the dirty work. He captured Apis, the one person who knew the dragon's whereabouts, but she slipped away during a storm. Enraged, he sent Eric out by warship to retrieve her, then grew suspicious when his agent went silent. His fleet ringed the Straw Hat Pirates and chained their ship in place, and he readied a giant cannon, only for Usopp to detonate it with a well-aimed shot. As a master tactician of sorts, he deployed a half-circle formation of linked vessels, yet his men could not hold off the invaders. When Eric revealed he had only used Nelson to locate the dragon, Nelson flew into a rage and turned his guns on him. After Ryu died and Nelson gloated over the corpse, Luffy delivered a devastating kick that split his ship in two. He was last seen confronting Eric again, struck down by a wind blast whose lethality is unknown. His rank of Teitoku has no formal place in the canonical Marine hierarchy, and official English versions render him as Admiral or Commodore.
