Appearance

Standing short with pale skin, Niphtal had small beady eyes set above thick lips, a broad chin, and ears whose openings were large and rounded. A spring of black curls topped his head, the highest of them coiling sharply upward. His outfit combined a light blue jacket with two oversized pockets, a chunky blue and black striped scarf, a gold armband, white gloves, and a black belt from which two pouches dangled. Strapped to his head was a band fitted with microscope lenses and a microphone, and he finished the look with light blue shorts, brown footwear over black leggings, and a single golden monocle.

Personality

Brimming with arrogance, Niphtal placed enormous faith in the machines he built. That confidence cracked when Hey overpowered his henchmen, and it shattered further once the Straw Hat Pirates tore through the robots he had counted on.

History

Though his personal combat skills looked thin, Niphtal commanded a squad of brawny archaeologists who fought on his behalf using shovels. What he lacked as a fighter he made up for as a scholar and especially as an engineer, building robots powerful enough to overcome Hey, the very man who had crushed his underlings.

He and his followers stormed a small village shortly after the Straw Hat Pirates had landed there. As Niphtal menaced the townsfolk, Hey and his companions burst in and frightened him, then knocked aside his subordinates with little effort. In response he unleashed his treasured machines, Kau Ra Kau and Zau Ra Zau, which quickly bested Hey's group. The Straw Hats stepped in next, and after Zoro blocked the robots' opening blow, the crew dismantled both machines. When his captain Simon arrived, a relieved Niphtal asked for aid and complained that the pirates had wrecked their research, which only enraged Simon, who then killed him.
