Personality

At heart Saien is a gentle, well-meaning man who pours his research into protecting travelers by thinning out the desert's dangerous wildlife. That kindness comes paired with a sloppy streak, however, since his carelessness let one of his test subjects, a Sandora Lizard, slip away from him.

History

While experimenting on a Sandora Lizard, Saien lost control of the creature, which bolted after his pet camel, Matsuge. Sitting in the Sandy Desert when the Straw Hat Pirates wandered by, he asked for their help retrieving the escaped lizard, explaining that experimental chemicals had left him too docile to chase it himself. He pointed them toward the Sandy Ruins after revealing that his camel carried the bait and had been doused with a scent that drew the lizard. In the Hysteria version of the desert he witnessed Fazaza abduct a child and tipped the crew off to the kidnapper's hiding place, noting that the man reeked of Sandora Lizard. The Straw Hats later returned to report that they had found Matsuge but had eaten the lizard pursuing him, so the animal could not be brought back. Saien paid the full reward anyway, satisfied that he had at least learned the lizards were edible.
