Shuraiya Bascùd

Chin-length and wavy, his light brown hair was described in design notes as a natural perm. At times he tops it with a broad-brimmed black hat. His standard look combines tall black boots, black cargo trousers that end around mid-shin, and a vivid yellow jacket that zips up the front, marked by black stripes down each arm and finished with a high black collar he keeps closed. A red hook emblem sits on the left of his chest with the word SICK printed beneath it, and a smaller version of that hook is inked onto his left cheek. He often tucks one or both hands into his pockets.

For all his vengeful purpose, Shuraiya comes across as a lively sort. His line of work leaves him with a low opinion of himself, yet an upbeat streak runs through him; he smiles often and clearly relishes a good fight. He shares one trait with Luffy as well, possessing a stomach with no apparent limit, able to put away enormous quantities of food without strain or any gain in weight.

The path that defines Shuraiya begins in his childhood. When he was twelve, the Gasparde Pirates descended on his home of Elena and killed his parents; the swordsman Needless wounded the boy and knocked his sister into a canal, and fewer than a hundred residents lived through the raid. From then on, he swore to track Gasparde down and kill him. Years later he turns up in the underground lounge for entrants of the Dead End Race, seated near Luffy and his crew, and loses his temper when Luffy keeps stealing his food. A brawl with Gasparde's men follows, during which Shuraiya holds his ground using only his wits and improvised weapons, drawing the interest of Gasparde, who offers him a place in the crew.

Searching the Salamander's boiler room for a weapon, he meets Biera and recounts his past. Gasparde then pits him against Needless, and after a brutal exchange Shuraiya wins by jamming his foe's claws into a paddle wheel and dropping him into the sea. He turns on Gasparde next, but his exhaustion and the captain's Ame Ame no Mi power put him down almost at once. Biera rescues both him and Luffy from the sinking ship, then breaks the news that his sister Adelle survived after all, having been pulled from the river years earlier and raised aboard the Salamander as the assistant Anaguma. Coming to terms with the news, Shuraiya resolves to begin a new life. He later appears among the crowd at the Pirates Festival.
