Appearance

Tall and powerfully built, Smoker is almost never seen without two lit cigars between his teeth at once. His cropped hair runs silvery-white, tinted pale teal in the early anime, and his brown eyes occasionally read as red. Over an open, fur-lined specialist coat he displays the Marine credo for justice across the back, with spare cigars fastened to the garment. His weapon is a jitte capped with Seastone, a tool broken twice over, first by Boa Hancock at Marineford and afterward by Vergo during the Punk Hazard ordeal. Brown gloves, blue jeans, a brown belt, and heavy military boots round out the look, while his custom three-wheeled motorbike lends him a rough, renegade air.

Following the timeskip his hair grows out, slicked back with shaved, faded sides, and he adds black glasses along with a stitched scar reaching from his brow down past his right eye. He lets the standard officer's coat hang from his shoulders in cloak fashion, his jitte resting at the back, making him one of the rare vice admirals who skips the conventional suit. As a cadet he kept a buzz cut, already smoking a single cigar, and as a child he wore a plain shirt with goggles slung around his neck.

Personality

A seasoned soldier infamous within his own organization for insubordination and a stubborn temper, Smoker nevertheless holds the divide between right and wrong above every other concern. He refuses credit he never earned, once exploding at the top brass for trying to award him and Tashigi for Crocodile's capture, which the Straw Hats had actually pulled off. Instead of the Marines' absolute justice, he answers to a personal moral compass, which lets him weigh allies and enemies by circumstance and even team up with the very pirates he vows to arrest later on.

Stern, gruff, and seldom smiling, he turns sharp toward people who waste his time, yet he is fiercely devoted to protecting civilians and his own troops from harm, treating his underlings as equals rather than tools. He distrusts the Seven Warlords completely, holding that a pirate remains a pirate, and carries a cynical suspicion that traitors lurk even among the Marines. His grudges against those who escape him run deep enough that he will overlook other notable pirates to chase a single quarry. As his name implies, he is a relentless smoker who keeps puffing even under a gas mask, prefers walking around bare-chested, and unwinds by balancing stacked stones.

Abilities

Smoker is a fearsome combatant whose Logia fruit sets him apart from most officers of his rank. He nearly captured Luffy at their very first meeting and would have succeeded had Dragon not stepped in, and during the Marineford war he beat the supernova captain effortlessly before Hancock cut in. His knack for hunting down and ensnaring enemies is the root of his White Hunter title. He earned the loyalty of the savage G-5 soldiers, gave Trafalgar Law a hard fight, and battled fellow vice admiral Vergo on roughly even terms despite Vergo's superior Haki. Beyond raw combat he boasts keen hearing and memory, sharp observation, and a clever, manipulative streak as an interrogator.

His Moku Moku no Mi lets him generate, steer, and become smoke, which he can thicken to bind and crush opponents or compress into jetting blunt strikes, and which he uses to rocket through the air and power his Billower Bike. After learning Haki, he can harden his fists and his Nanashaku Jitte with Armament and sense foes with Observation. The jitte's Seastone tip lets him subdue Devil Fruit criminals without affecting himself, since he keeps the point clear of his body and carries the weapon intact even while in smoke form.
