Yellow eyes set with tiny pupils gave Soro a fierce look. His coat was a pale brown, his nose darker, and his jaws lined with sharp fangs. He was frequently shown with saliva dripping from his mouth.

Roaming the town unchecked left Soro savage and untamed. The anime leaned into this, portraying him as openly vicious, frightening residents and stirring up chaos wherever he went.

Helmeppo turned the wolf loose in Shells Town, where it menaced the townsfolk and closed in on Rika. To protect her, Zoro struck the beast down with a single slash, stunning the onlookers. The killing led to Zoro's arrest and a month-long sentence without food, during which he crossed paths with his future captain, Monkey D. Luffy. The two versions of the tale diverge sharply. The manga only briefly references Soro, implying he attacked Rika in the street, while the anime stretches the moment into a full flashback set in a tavern run by Rika and her mother Ririka, with Rika weakly trying to shoo the wolf away using a broom. The anime also softens his end, showing Zoro hurling a stool rather than cutting him, so it stays unconfirmed whether he actually died. His name caused confusion for years: early fan translations mistook a bystander's shout of "He really did it!" for the name Inugata, and his real name, Soro, only surfaced in the databook Blue. The Viz manga, oddly, calls him a dog and suggests he was merely one of a whole pack kept by Helmeppo.
