Appearance

Light blonde hair and a notched chin distinguish this slim young man of roughly average height. How he presents himself has shifted dramatically over time. In his entitled phase the hair was styled into an odd mushroom shape above gaudy leisure wear, and a ring resembling a rubber band sat on one hand. Losing his father's backing reduced him to the basic chore-boy garb worn by ordinary recruits.

Garp's punishing regimen reshaped him into a taller, broader figure. On reaching chief petty officer he switched to a wide ponytail, dressing in a white shirt beneath a pale green vest, with black gloves, purple slacks, and a strange dark visor across his eyes. Promotion to lieutenant commander brought a brimmed white hat and a junior officer's coat, and unlike many of his peers he actually slips his arms through the sleeves rather than draping it over his shoulders.

Personality

While Morgan ruled the 153rd Branch, Helmeppo lorded over Shells Town as a spoiled brat, leaning on threats of arrest or execution and crumbling into cowardice the moment that leverage stopped working. A streak of feeling still separated him from his father, seen in his horror when Morgan ordered the child Rika killed. Once his father was deposed, he landed in chore duty alongside Koby, spurning the boy's friendly overtures while staying loyal to Morgan, even weeping before the scheduled execution.

Everything turned when he recognized that his father was as savage as any pirate. Disowning Morgan severed his final tie to that pampered life and drove him toward maturity, leaving him braver, less entitled, and eventually a close friend to Koby. By the time of Water 7 he openly called his earlier self a selfish boy who fed off a parent's rank. He tends to assess danger more coolly than the hotheaded Koby, and after the timeskip he developed an exaggerated formality that he applies even to his partner.

History

Living large as the son of Captain Morgan, Helmeppo ordered junior Marines around and tormented the residents of Shells Town. His pet wolf Soro was killed by the wandering bounty hunter Roronoa Zoro after it lunged at the girl Rika, so he jailed Zoro, seized his swords, and dangled freedom if the swordsman endured a month without meals. With Zoro still unbroken once more than a week of hunger had passed, Helmeppo decided to execute him publicly as a deterrent. The arrest had lured rookie Monkey D. Luffy and the would-be Marine Koby to town, and Luffy, furious at the taunting and at the smashing of Rika's offering, punched him flat. He ran to Morgan demanding payback, took a blow from his own father instead, and was later knocked unconscious by Luffy after trying to use Koby as a hostage.

After Morgan's fall, Helmeppo stayed at the branch as a chore boy, resentful of laboring beside the eager Koby. When the imprisoned Morgan escaped and grabbed his son as a shield, Helmeppo finally cast him aside and swam back toward the Marine vessel. Garp brought both youths to Marine Headquarters for harsh drilling, with Bogard teaching them the blade. The two later clashed with Zoro and Luffy at Water 7 following the Enies Lobby raid and were swiftly beaten, with Helmeppo dismayed that neither remembered him.

He went on to report to Marineford during the Whitebeard Pirates conflict, helped defend the Levely convoy, and was petrified by Boa Hancock at Amazon Lily before being restored. In the final saga, after Marshall D. Teach captured Koby, Helmeppo joined Garp's assault on Hachinosu and shielded Koby and Prince Grus with his own body, then tearfully followed Garp's last command to flee once the vice admiral chose to stay and sacrifice himself. By this point a lieutenant commander within SWORD, Helmeppo fights with a pair of kukri, commands Armament Haki, and can perform Soru.
