Back

Wyper, nicknamed "Berserker," once commanded the Shandia warriors in their struggle to wrest Upper Yard away from the self-styled god Enel. A descendant of Kalgara spurred by his people's past and a debt owed to Mont Blanc Noland, he opened the Skypiea arc as a foe and closed it as an ally, later leading God's Guards after the timeskip.

Appearance

Standing tall with a heavily built frame, Wyper bears the little back wings shared by the Shandia. Tribal markings cover the left half of his face along with that same shoulder, while his very long dark brown hair climbs into a mohawk that flows into a braid trailing past his waist, a style reminiscent of Native American looks, set off by small round earrings. In battle he stays shirtless and shoeless save for his skate-type Wavers, dons a grass skirt belted by a rope hung with three fang-shaped or claw-shaped charms, and almost always grips a cigarillo in his teeth, a vice rooted in boyhood when he gnawed on grass stalks. At his first appearance his face was hidden behind a fearsome tribal mask, which he quickly discarded. Following the timeskip his hair hangs loose below his shoulders, the coat of his fellow guards is tied at his waist rather than worn, and his physique is bulkier still.

Personality

At first glance Wyper comes across as savage and rash, reluctant to trust anyone from outside and ready to strike without weighing the consequences, which is precisely how he came by his berserker reputation. Hidden under that fury is an intense love for his people and their land, joined to deep reverence for Noland, the comrade of Kalgara whose memory leaves him feeling indebted. Those two forces, his devotion and his sense of obligation, are what genuinely propel him toward rebuilding his people's home and laying Noland's spirit to rest, even as his tunnel vision frequently blinds him and drives his body past breaking. He is far from cold-hearted, though; realizing that Luffy chased an aim much like his own stirred him enough to abandon his prejudice, and once Enel fell and fighting was no longer needed, he eased at last into peace.

Abilities

Wyper ranked as the mightiest Shandia warrior of his time and headed the campaign against Upper Yard. His specialty is close-quarters combat, riding skate-type Wavers to add force to his kicks and weave around enemies before unloading his Burn Bazooka, which spits white-blue fire when fitted with a Breath Dial, and he hauls a large ballistic shield besides. His stamina verges on inhuman: he triggered the Reject Dial, a device ten times the strength of an Impact Dial and ordinarily fatal after one use, on three occasions and lived, brushed off an Axe Dial to his back and a spear that set his arm aflame, and kept getting up under Enel's blows. For the survival game he lined his skates with Seastone so he could pin down fruit-empowered fighters like Luffy and Enel himself.

Brought up on the Shandia chief's stories of an ancient charge to protect a sacred text and win back a stolen homeland, Wyper was stirred most by the saga of Kalgara and Noland and climbed quickly through the warrior ranks. A doomed peace talk with the former God Gan Fall, ruined when Wyper read a casual comment about pumpkin juice as a slight against Noland, only deepened the strife. Through Enel's Survival Game he toppled the priest Shura, traded blows with Luffy to a draw, and pushed through a turbulent free-for-all that drew in Ohm, Zoro, Gan Fall, and the enormous serpent Nola. As Enel's lightning ravaged his homeland, he discovered that Luffy intended to ring the Golden Bell for Noland's descendant Mont Blanc Cricket, and, moved by this, he helped bring down Giant Jack so Luffy could reach the God. When the bell rang out at last, Wyper heard the melody he had ached to sound and dropped from his injuries, soon treated by Chopper. With peace settled, he poured his strength into restoring the forest, and following the timeskip he rose to lead God's Guards beside Genbo, Kamakiri, and Braham.
