Personality

Far meeker than the pirate he shares a name with, Luffy is shy yet remarkably laid-back, quickly warming to Nakatsugawa Usopp at their first meeting and shrugging off the teasing his classmates direct at him. That easygoing nature runs to an extreme, since he was willing to keep drinking vinegar after Usopp claimed it would transform him into a Rubber Human.

He is afraid of animals, though Usopp's encouragement helped him begin to overcome that fear.

History

Sharing his name with Monkey D. Luffy has long made him a target of bullying, with classmates jokingly treating him as though he were a One Piece character. During his early years he went to preschool together with Morishita Yukie, and he formed a fast friendship with Koyama Nami when they met, bonding over the fact that both of their names came from One Piece characters. Nami became the one person who refrained from mocking his name, and she quietly developed a crush on him, though he remains oblivious and treats her as a friend.

One day after school, Usopp approached Luffy and Nami, introducing himself as another One Piece namesake, and the three spent the afternoon together before Luffy added him on Line. The following day, while classmates were bullying him, Luffy discovered that Usopp had founded a Pirate Club and named him its captain, and although the news stunned him, Usopp rescued him from the bullies. As a club member he grew closer to both friends, regularly swept up in Usopp's schemes and Nami's efforts to nudge their bond toward romance.
