Appearance

Tall and slim, Zala has a curvy figure, pale skin, green eyes, full lips, and curly hair colored dark blue. Her signature trait is an overdone, swaying gait meant to read as seductive. While playing the cafe owner Paula, she wears square yellow crystal glasses, a bandanna of mixed pinks and turquoise, a pink-embroidered tank top, low brown pants, and platform sandals, her long hair gathered into a ponytail.

Her best-known battle outfit is dark brown and skimpy: a short fur-trimmed jacket sits over a bikini top patterned to resemble a spider's web across her stomach, worn with low leather pants and sandals on platforms. A long pale pipe often hangs from her lips. Throughout the Operation: Meet Baroque Works cover story she appears in striped prison garb with heavy cuffs.

Personality

Composed and slow to anger, Zala offsets her partner Mr. 1 and seldom breaks her calm. Hard to amuse, she likes to draw out fights, stalling against Nami until frustration finally pushed her into a serious attack. Deadly but less severe than Mr. 1, she let slip touches of mercy, offering Nami a painless end if she gave up and admitting she pitied the girl for being stuck with what looked like a useless weapon. She also showed rare boldness among her peers, putting a direct question to Crocodile about his aims while the rest of the agents shrank from him. Inside the organization she often acted as peacemaker, breaking up squabbles to keep the work moving.

History

Zala's power comes from a Paramecia-class Devil Fruit, the Toge Toge no Mi, which lets pointed spikes erupt anywhere across her skin, a trait she mostly turns toward skewering enemies. Doping herself swells her muscle and power enough to wreck a building in one motion, and spikes on her soles give her bursts of speed. The fruit's balance of offense and defense, combined with her own skill, earned her a thirty-five million berry bounty and a rank beneath only Miss All-Sunday among the female agents, paired with Mr. 1.

Crocodile called her to Arabasta for the closing phase of Operation Utopia. She first held up the Paula disguise, then gathered with her fellow officers in Rainbase, where Miss All-Sunday unveiled their boss as the Warlord Crocodile. Together with Mr. 1 she rammed a weapons ship into Nanohana, roughed up a boy who had seen through Mr. 2's ruse, and pressed on toward Alubarna. At the capital's western gate the agents lost Vivi among the cloaked decoys, and Zala wound up squaring off against Nami instead.

The long fight had her pinning and gashing Nami again and again with spikes while she sneered at the girl's unproven Clima-Tact. Nami answered with mirages, gradually figuring out her weather weapon and raising a thundercloud that hit Zala with lightning. A spinning finisher from Nami finally hurled Zala through a building and put her down. Tashigi's Marines arrested her in the aftermath and shipped her to prison. In the Operation: Meet Baroque Works cover story, Miss Goldenweek's group sprang her and the others, after which Zala helped open the new Spiders Cafe and settled back into running it as bartender and owner.
