Summary

Out on the water, the crew plays a Tone Dial that fills the deck with New Genesis. Jinbe cannot place the tune, so Usopp explains its global fame and Brook adds that its melody sends the heart racing. On a far cliff, Uta studies the sea and lets her thoughts slip back to when she was small.

The story jumps twelve years into the past. Practicing his punches around Foosha Village, the boy Luffy knocks Woop Slap into a stall and shrugs off the mayor's nagging about helping the townsfolk. He carries a gifted bag of fruit up Mt. Colubo, where a monkey tries to rob him; the two settle it with a brawl Luffy wins, then split the food. A boar later chases him over a ledge into the ocean, and Garp drags him out, grumbling that a future Marine who cannot swim is hopeless.

Key Events

At sea aboard the Red Hair Pirates' ship, Shanks hands young Uta jewelry from the treasure and then refuses to give her the strange fruit he is guarding in a chest, gesturing instead at the Goa Kingdom, the crew's intended port of call. Once ashore, Luffy meets them at the pier and orders them off, only for Uta to dare him to make them leave while naming herself Shanks' daughter. Inside Partys Bar, Luffy pesters the captain to take him aboard and loses a rigged shell game. Uta then reveals she is the crew's diva and performs Where the Wind Blows, leaving Luffy awestruck, though his own clumsy attempt at the Moron Song drives her out of the bar in disgust.

Notes

Because the pair are close in age, Shanks tells them to be friends, but Uta points out that she is nine and Luffy only seven; the children climb into the hills, where she beats him at every contest and tells him the most enjoyable place of all lies within oneself. This is a filler episode linked to the movie. It follows the manga in keeping Luffy unable to swim, the eyecatcher displays Shanks' former wanted poster, and the Moron Song verse he sings first appeared in Chapter 257 and Episode 169. The installment launches the Uta's Past Arc.
