Summary

At sea, Luffy sketches a jolly roger to stand for his growing crew, and after he tidies up the design, Usopp paints the emblem onto the sails. Nami then sights the Island of Rare Animals on the horizon, a place whispered to hold legendary treasure yet said to be guarded by the gods. Eager to plunder it, the crew put ashore, where strange hybrid beasts and an unseen man calling himself a god confront them. His clumsy traps accomplish nothing, and when he tries to slip away, the pirates run him down.

Key Events

The captured man turns out to be Gaimon, his body wedged into a chest where he has lived for twenty years. He recounts how, as a boy aboard a pirate ship, he scaled a mountain to claim treasure at last, only to tumble into an empty chest and get stuck, while his crew sailed off without him. Luffy climbs the same peak and finds all five chests at the summit hollow. He invites Gaimon to join the Straw Hats, but Gaimon declines, content among the island's animals and freed by the certainty that no treasure was ever there. The crew thank him and set course for their next stop.
